Why The X Factor Needs Ashly Williams Back
Article, Oct 28, 2013
When Ashly Williams appeared on tele on the X Factor in Sept. 2013 singing "I Will Always Love You", she received a standing ovation from not only the audience but also the judge panel. Sending Ashly home after the second round left thousands of fans with a question unanswered: WHY?
This article will discuss why sending Ashly Williams home was a mistake and how the video statistics back the point. In a survey conducted on October 27th, details of videos on YouTube.com were collected for an analysis. Only videos published by the X Factor USA were included. A list was compiled and the result is shown below.
Rion Paige peaks the list with a staggering 12 millions views. Lillie McCloud comes second with 5.2 million followed by Alex and Sierra at nearly 5.2 and Rachel Potter at 4.5 million views. Ashly Williams is number 5 at 3.8 million views.
Ashly Williams ranks high
Now, that picture completely changes if you count how many likes and comments each contestant receives per view. Suddenly, Ashly is number 1 among top soloists. Out of one thousand views, each contestant receives the following number of likes:
The pattern repeats itself if you look at the number of comments per one thousand views:
The only ones to challenge Ashly is the extremely popular couple, Alex and Sierra, in the groups category.

But why not just stick to the number of views?
The number of views for a video is of course important. What this number does not indicate, however, is how people actually react to a particular performance. The number of likes and comments do. The difference between these two indicators is, that while YouTube users can only click "Like" once, any user can add many comments. Which indicator is the most important depends on what kind of outcome you need.
Without the X Factor support
Being out of the contest means you no longer have the X Factor to promote your video. Of the contestants mentioned in this survey, only Ashly is out. The rest still benefits from the X Factor presence in magazines, television and the likes. People will tend to view YouTube videos of the singers that they read about and can follow on the X Factor. That taking into account makes it even more surprising that the number of people viewing Ashly's video can keep up with the pace. So something other than the X Factor must be supporting Ashly.
The answer lies in Ashly's voice and Ashly herself. Of all contestants singing "I Will Always Love You" on the X Factor over the years, only Ashly has managed to reach the level of Whitney Houston. Further, it doesn't take long to realize that Ashly has a profound impact on people. If you read the comments on her video on YouTube.com, every third comment includes words like "I was left in tears" or "you made me cry". Demi Lovato, the X Factor judge, was left in tears which was actually caught on camera.
This again means that while some contestants become popular while in spot light, their impact may only be short term. In contrast, Ashly Williams' impact is long term and people will remember her for years. People will remember her singing, and the X Factor will be remembered because they introduced Ashly Williams.
An easy solution already in store
Demi Lovato probably felt under a severe pressure by the time she had to decide who was going to continue during the second round and who wasn't. Unfortunately, she sent the wrong person home. A poor choice of song didn't help Ashly even though she did get 3 yes'es among the 4 judges.
That Ashly Williams has a phenomenal voice is obvious. As Ashly has a long term effect on people, having her back in the contest will be beneficial for the X Factor contest. With another top performance as in "I Will Always Love You", Ashly Williams' presence would definitely intensify the competition. The musical standard would rise. And the X Factor already possesses the solution: a reintroduction of the wild card. The X Factor only needs to make sure that Ashly Williams receives it!

About this survey; please refer to the list below (click to enlarge). Video details of nearly all fourty contestants were collected, however, only details of the 4 winners in each group are listed. The date of publishing a video has importance. If a video is published one week later than other videos, this video could be short of half a million views.
